* What this quote says is that in a story, the description of the characters could make them feel so real that the reader may forget that they are fictional. What he wants to do is mixing reality with fiction in the reader´s head.
Be careful because it is the other way round; Talese means to write NONFICTION but wants to appeal to the sense "magic" that fictional characters are often associated to.
